Mountain Sun Cherry Dip On Nitro! 7.0%

What's better than Belgian Dip? A Belgian Dip with Cherries!! You may remember last years Chocolate Cherry that was dry hopped with dried cherries. Well, we have taken it to a whole new level this year by incorporating a cherry puree into an entire batch of Belgian Dip. We will be debuting this taste sensation on Valentines day. Grab your girl or guy and come celebrate with something other than a box of chocolates.

A Valentine's special, indeed! There is some serious cherry smackdown going on this year. Who needs a box of chocolates when you can have the Belgian Dip with nice, sweet, cherry overtones? A super-solid 3 climbingboulder stars. It's hard to improve upon perfection though, and I'm a plain 'ol chocolate lover...

Mountain Sun Zomby Woof Stout On Nitro! 4.4%

Served exclusively by way of the nitro faucet, Zomby Woof is an Irish-style Dry Stout. Black as the day is long and a nice way to end it, this beer is loaded with roasted barley and black malt, with just a bit of caramel malt to round out the flavor.

GUINNESS, Beamish, Murphy's and Zomby Woof. This stout fits in perfectly with its Irish predecessors. Dry, roasty and creamy. Smooth and easy drinking. In the mood for a GUINNESS? Have one of these instead! 3 climbingboulder stars.

Mountain Sun Korova Cream Stout On Nitro! 5.1%

This Stout is not as ultra-violent as its name might suggest. With over 5 pounds of milk sugar per barrel, it is especially smooth, but has just enough roastiness to remind you of its stout hood. The inclusion of 8 malt varieties provides a complex backdrop for the melee of creaminess that ensues.

Creamy, creamy, creamy. A perfect adjective for this wonderfully smooth stout. Formerly known as the "8-ball Stout", the Korova Cream frequents the Mountain Sun Taps year round. Just as sweet and creamy as the Belgian Dip, but without the Chocolate. Without a doubt, 3 climbingboulder stars.

Great Divide Brewing, CO Oak-aged Yeti Imperial Stout On Tap 9.5%

Aging on a blend of French and toasted oak chips infuses a subtle oak and vanilla character into Yeti's already intense chocolate, roasted coffee malt flavor and hugely assertive hop profile.

I was thinking a few weeks ago that this would be quite a worthy addition to Stout Month, and... Voila! It's now on tap!!! Heavy and thick like 10w40, this is a highly viscous stout that sticks to the sides of your glass and your mouth! Chocolatey with a long lingering bitterness. Oakey, woody, and earthy, the burnt and roasted flavor is fulfilling with just a sip. In the mood for 1 and only 1 stout? Better get this one. Without a doubt, 3 climbingboulder stars.

Mountain Sun Brokeback Stout On Tap 6.5%

We put together a very contemporary American Style Stout that includes the unique nuance of Plum. Strong, yet sensitive at 6.5% ABV.

For starters, I'm gonna have to try this one again. The 2x Cherry Dip and Jalapeno Junk Burger might have been tainting my palatte a bit... My first impression was of a smooth and sweet stout that was quite refreshing. I was having a hard time distinguishing the "nuance of Plum" in the aftertaste, so I'll start with 2 climbingboulder stars and update this when I have another pint. Looking forward to it!

Avery Brewing, CO The Czar On Tap!
12.2%

The molasses flavor has intensified along with the cocoa, mocha and toffee. Flavors emerging include ripe plums, and dates. The nuances of this monster are astonishing!

Is it possible that this beer is even stronger than last year? This unique stout is identifiable with one sniff! Full bodied, intense roastiness and maltiness, and yet the hops still sing in your mouth. The spicy and flowery scent perfectly enhance the thick and chewy fruitiness of this king of stouts. No, this CZAR of stouts! So intense and robust that you want to sip it with your eyes closed... This is indeed an astonishing monster, smashing the climbingboulder 3-star limit.

Mountain Sun Yonder Mountain Stout On Tap 7.6%

Made in honor of our local string band heroes, this stout is as complex as the jams that the Yonder boys throw down. The oatmeal imperial stout has really taken hold as a customer favorite. It has a wonderful roasty aroma and a big body that is balanced by the slickness contributed by a fair dose of flaked oats.
Mountain Sun Buffalo Head Stout On Tap 5.2%

Those of you who are into botanicals will enjoy this new experiment of ours. It's another installment in our "Head Beer series" Did you ever wonder what stout would be like with Juniper Berries? Look for a drier, earthier sense in this one.

Dry and crisp, almost like a wheat beer. Very light-bodied for a stout. There is a juniper burstiness that smells like my childhood backyard. With it's lingering pungent aftertast, this stout would rule on the Nitro Tap. A unique stout, without going over the top. 3 climbingboulder stars.

Mountain Sun Usurper Russian Imperial Stout On Tap 10%

As far as we're concerned, the crown jewel of Stout Month 2006. this was the 2000th batch brewed at Mountain Sun. All of our brewers collaborated on brewing this one. It's been aging for 6 months.

Finally, a stout to rival the Czar! The floral complexity of this monster hits you before you even take a sip. Every sip peels back another layer of this hugely complex feast of an Imperial Stout. Served in half-pints only, you'll want to try and drink it slowly to savor every sip, but you'll be surprised at how quickly your glass suddenly becomes empty! Three climbingboulder stars for sure.

Deschutes Brewery, OR Obsidian Stout On Tap 6.7%

Smooth and black, like the volcanic rock, Obsidian Stout is a solid, satisfying beer with a rich roasted malt finish.
Snake River Brewing Co. Zonker Stout On Tap 5.8%

A rich, well-balanced foreign-style stout with a generous amount of roasted barley. Complex hop sequencing creates superbly balanced flavor.

Thick and Wild. This heavy stout tastes like it should be 8.5% instead of 5.8% ABV. Hoppy and bitter like an IPA. You can't go wrong with this burly man's stout!

Stone Brewery, CA Imperial Russian Stout Off Tap 10.8%

Dark malts and toffee aroma finish with a lingering flavor that makes this a sipping beer. Slightly sweet, but not too sweet to deter the hop-heads.

This deep, dark brown stout with a dark tan head is in its second year of the Mountain Sun's Stout Month roster. Stone brews a very smooth and pleasant Imperial Stout. It has a wonderful charred smokiness as it first enters your mouth, and then finishes clean and snappy. Unusual for an Imperial, but giving it the aforementioned pleasantness that I find unique to this stout. 3 climbingboulder stars.

Mountain Sun Thunderhead Stout Off Tap 6.8%

This bold, rich ale is divined from the famous Maris Otter malt, two varieties of Munich malt, dark caramel malt and generous portions of both black and roasted barley. Lightly hopped, this brew allows the grains to deliver a Tootsie Roll-like flavor.

This has been a much neglected stout in my repertoire, and after having it again for the first time in over a year, I liked it so much I ordered another pint! This is a rich stout that gives an III (Imperial Initial Impresssion), but without the bite of too much hops. Full-bodied, roasty, rich and mellow all at the same time. It gains an additional climbingboulder star this year!

Southern Sun Belgian Dip Chocolate Stout Off Tap 7.0%

A hearty stout from our sister Southern Sun Brewery. Using over 30 pounds of luscious Belgian milk chocolate, we've also included 10 pounds of Belgian dark chocolate for added richness. As if this wasn't already a chocoholic's delight , we threw in a little milk sugar for extra creaminess. This stout always gets a lot of fan mail when we have it on tap.

My all-time favorite stout brewed by the Mountain Sun! Anytime the Belgian Dip is on tap, I have a hard time branching out to anything new. If the Young's is milk-chocolate, then the Belgian Dip is special-dark. Deep, dark and rich, this stout delivers a heavenly mouthful of perfection. It shatters the 3-star barrier with one sip.

Mendocino Brewing, CA Black Hawk Stout Off Tap 5.0%

Highly carbonated. A sweet first impression with a bitter, growing aftertaste. Very subtle flavors. This is a fast and straightforward stout, but all in all, it's pretty hard to finish a whole pint. Not really a sipping stout either at only 5.0% ABV. Only 1 climbingboulder star.

Young's Brewery, England Double Chocolate Stout Off Tap
2 more kegs?
5.0%

Pale, crystal and chocolate malts combine with roasted barley, a blend of sugars, dark chocolate and chocolate essence to make this English original dessert in a glass.

Wow! Quite simply - Wow! I think I say that everytime I take the first sip of a Young's Double Chocolate. It is hands down the smoothest, creamiest, chocolateyist, most indulgent stout on the planet. It is served exclusively on the Nitro tap, and you'll want to order another one before you're even halfway through with the first - mostly because of the addiction, and partly because of the 3-5 minute settle time to pour this stout properly. Pure bliss! This is one of the very few stouts to break the climbingboulder rating system. 3 stars is just not enough!!!

75th Street Brewing, MO Imperial Stout Off Tap ? 6-7% ?

Dry. Not too carbonated, but not very Imperial for an Imperial stout. No frills flavor that gets right to the point. Excellent character, and swallow for swallow a good bang for the buck. Worthy of 2 climbingboulder stars.

Pumphouse Brewery, CO Backdraft Imperial Stout Off Tap 10%

Winner of the Silver Medal in the Imperial Stout category at the 2003 GABF, this huge beer is in your face. Flavors of black licorice and chocolate find community with the judicious amount of hops and alcohol warming.

The alcohol warming in the official description is right on. Just swirling this stout around in you mouth makes you warm! It has a hoppy and spicy bite that keeps lingering long after you've swallowed it. A solid 3 climbingboulder stars

Dogfish Head Brewery, DE Chicory Stout Gone! 5.2%

A dark beer made with roasted chicory coffee, St. Johns Wort and licorice root. This is a creamy, roasty, dry stout with a hint of chocolate.

Last year, this beer earned 1 star, but this year, its excessive carbonation masks all the chicory and licorice hints and leaves you wishing you were drinking something different.

Rogue Brewery, OR Shakespeare Stout Off Tap 6.2%

Ebony in color, a rich creamy head, mellow chocolate aftertaste - a tongue pleaser and tonsil teaser.
Anderson Valley, CA Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout Off Tap 5.7%

Deep, dark brown color, full-bodied, velvety-smooth on the tongue, lots of mocha character with a slightly hoppy bite.
North Coast Brewery, CA Old Rasputin Imperial Stout Off Tap 8.9%

A Russian Imperial stout. Smooth, dark and malty.

* A very "climbingboulder-esque" evaluation by me. Unfortunately, climbingboulder doesn't exist anymore and now this is the only place you'll see the stars and bombs...

Stout Evaluations:
These are the evaluations given by me (obviously, it's my website - can you tell I like chocolate and imperial stouts?). They are extremely subjective, and are dependent upon the day of the week, my BAC, the situation in Chechnya, and other intangibles. In other words, you may completely disagree. If you do, great - more of the better stouts left for me to drink! Untapped stouts that are rated I've tried someplace else or at prior stoutmonths, and their ratings are subject to change without notice. Stouts without stars (or bombs) I have not yet tried.

- 4 stars
Stoutpendous! I could live off of this stout. Everytime I have one, I'm torn between ordering another and trying something else. It's so incredibly delicious and smooth that orgasmic sounds often escape my lips as I sip from the chalice of perfection.

- 3 stars
This stout is great. It's one of the stouts that makes you smile as you take the very first sip. The flavor and smoothness of the dark liquid are factors also. It's a stout that, when you're done, you say excitedly to your friends, "That was frickin' awesome! You're gonna love it." You look forward to drinking it again.

- 2 stars
A pretty nice stout. You wouldn't mind drinking the stout again after you've tried the others.

- 1 star
Nothing to write home about. You're happy you drank the stout, and enjoyed it, but probably wouldn't order it again given all the other choices.

- Bomb
This stout was a waste of time; it just plain sucked. It shouldn't even qualify as a stout. The lack of flavor and body put this stout on par with lesser beers. Not many stouts get this rating; when one does, you probably shouldn't bother even trying it.

- Untasted
This stout has never been on tap at The Mountain Sun before (at least in the last 5 or so years), and as such, I haven't had the pleasure of tasting it.
