Brewery Stout ABV Status and
Evaluation**
Description
Mountain Sun Belgian Dip Chocolate Stout 7.3% On Nitro - At Last!
At last we have a name! This stout has been eponymous since its inception about three years ago. For a little while it gave off too much of a creepy oompa loompa vibe. Another cult favorite, the chocolate stout boasts a generous (22 pounds) kettle addition of Belgian chocolate. The blend of both dark and milk chocolate yields a wonderful balance that is rich yet smooth. It is customary to drink this stout on nitro while fully submerging one's nose in the frothy head for the best effect. Yeahh, BABY!!
Mountain Sun Thunderhead Stout 6.8% On Tap
This bold, rich ale is divined from the famous Maris Otter malt, two varieties of Munich malt, dark caramel malt and generous portions of both black and roasted barley. Lightly hopped, this brew allows the grains to deliver a Tootsie Roll-like flavor.
Mountain Sun Zomby Woof Stout 4.4% On Nitro
Served exclusively by way of the nitro faucet, Zomby Woof is an Irish-style Dry Stout. Black as the day is long and a nice way to end it, this beer is loaded with roasted barley and black malt, with just a bit of caramel malt to round out the flavor.
Mountain Sun Raisin Hell Stout 5.6% Off Tap
Made with Organic Flame raisins, this stout is medium-bodied and well-balanced, with a mouthfeel that wraps your palate with no harsh aftertaste.
Southern Sun Korova Cream Stout 5.0% On Nitro
A sweet, English-style stout, Korova Cream Stout (formerly named 8-Ball Stout) is made with Maris Otter malt, roasted barley and Fuggle hops. A healthy dose of lactose creates a creamy, smooth body that complements the roasted malt flavors.
Southern Sun Yonder Mountain Stout 7.6% Off Tap
Made in honor of our local string band heroes, this stout is as complex as the jams that the Yonder boys throw down. The oatmeal imperial stout has really taken hold as a customer favorite. It has a wonderful roasty aroma and a big body that is balanced by the slickness contributed by a fair dose of flaked oats.
Deschutes Obsidian Stout 6.7% Off Tap.
Smooth and black, like the volcanic rock, Obsidian Stout is a solid, satisfying beer with a rich roasted malt finish.
BJ's Tatonka Stout 8.0% Off Tap.
Full-bodied and rich, with sweet and roasty malt notes, this stout blends a symphony of flavors to make it the ultimate sipping beer.
Oskar Blues Reverend Sandi's Sinful Stout 3.5% On Tap A dry, black Irish-style draft stout. Nitro poured for a light and creamy head.
Snake River Brewing Co. Zonker Stout 5.8% On Nitro again!
A rich, well-balanced foreign-style stout with a generous amount of roasted barley. Complex hop sequencing creates superbly balanced flavor.
Avery Brewing Co. The Czar 11.9% Gone!
Spicy, floral hop notes blend with flavors of toffee, mocha, molasses, candied currants and anise in this Imperial Stout. Mountain Sun is proud to be one of two purveyors of this amazing beer on tap.
Young's Double Chocolate Stout 5.0% On Nitro!
Pale, crystal and chocolate malts combine with roasted barley, a blend of sugars, dark chocolate and chocolate essence to make this English original dessert in a glass.
North Coast Brewing Co. Old Rasputin Imperial Stout 8.9% On Tap again!
A rich, intense brew with a robust palate, a fruity nose and a warming finish. Very complex. The batch we are serving has been aged nearly one year.
Anderson Valley Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout 5.7% Off Tap.
With its deep, dark brown-black color, thick, full-bodied, velvety-smooth mouthfeel, mocha character and strong yet subtle hop bite, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout is one of the thickest, richest and most complex stouts on the market today.
Twisted Pine Brewing Co. Twisted Stout 6.2% Not tapped Twisted Stout is a cream stout brewed with several specialty malts combined with 10% roasted barley, giving a perfect balance of sweet roastiness.
Redfish Brewhouse Space Stout 5.8% Off Tap
This is a big, full-bodied black beer with a wonderful balance of roasted and chocolate malt flavors. Flaked oats are added to the grist to give it a silky mouthfeel and sweet finish.
Dillon Dam McLuhr's Irish Stout 4.5% Off Tap.
This complex brew is made with large amounts of caramel and black malts as well as plenty of roasted barley for a full-bodied mouthfeel and a smooth, smoky finish.
Beamish Irish Stout 4.1% Gone.
First brewed in 1792, Beamish Irish Stout is the only Irish stout still brewed exclusively in Ireland. A deep reddish-brown stout with a thick, creamy head, Beamish is silky smooth with chocolate and coffee undertones. At just 4.1% ABV, this is a great session beer.
Tommyknocker Black Powder Stout 5.6% Gone.
Using an aggressive amount of roasted malts, Black Powder Stout features roasted coffee aromas and flavors complemented by sweetness and a full mouthfeel from caramel malts and oatmeal. British East Kent Golding hops provide light hop undertones.
Golden City Oatmeal Stout 7.2% Gone.
A creamy stout in the English style, brewed with 7 malts.
Lefthand Brewery Imperial Stout 10% On Tap
A traditional Russian Imperial Stout, this is a silky smooth, flavorful black beer. A medley of roasted malt and aggressive use of hops temper the malty sweetness and the long conditioning period allows this unfiltered ale to mellow and blend the flavors.
Pumphouse Brewery Backdraft Imperial Stout 10% On Tap
Winner of the Silver Medal in the Imperial Stout category at the 2003 GABF, this huge beer is in your face. Flavors of black licorice and chocolate find community with the judicious amount of hops and alcohol warming.
Walnut Brewery Devil's Thumb Stout 5.0% Not tapped
Loads of black and roasted malts give a deep onyx color. Because this stout is served unfiltered on a nitrogen tap, it remains smooth and creamy to the palate.
Smuggler's Brewery 10:13 Stout ~5.0% On Tap
This wonderfully smooth and mellow stout is making a surprise appearance as it is unlisted on the printouts at the Mountain Sun. An initial sweet, smooth chocolatey taste is complemented with no bitter aftertaste. A very light fermentation makes this beer a good candidate for the Nitro tap, and it would be excellent on Nitro.

** A very "climbingboulder-esque" evaluation by me.

Stout Evaluations:
These are the evaluations given by me (obviously, it's my website). They are extremely subjective, and are dependent upon the day of the week, my BAC, the situation in Chechnya, and other intangibles. In other words, you may completely disagree. If you do, great - more of the better stouts left for me to drink! Untapped stouts that are rated I've tried someplace else, and their ratings are subject to change without notice. Stouts without stars (or bombs) I have not yet tried.

- 4 stars
Stoutpendous! I could live off of this stout. Everytime I have one, I'm torn between ordering another and trying something else. It's so incredibly delicious and smooth that orgasmic sounds often escape my lips as I sip from the chalice of perfection.

- 3 stars
This stout is great. It's one of the stouts that makes you smile as you take the very first sip. The flavor and smoothness of the dark liquid are factors also. It's a stout that, when you're done, you say excitedly to your friends, "That was frickin' awesome! You're gonna love it." You look forward to drinking it again.

- 2 stars
A pretty nice stout. You wouldn't mind drinking the stout again after you've tried the others.

- 1 star
Nothing to write home about. You're happy you drank the stout, and enjoyed it, but probably wouldn't order it again given all the other choices.

- Bomb
This stout was a waste of time; it just plain sucked. It shouldn't even qualify as a stout. The lack of flavor and body put this stout on par with lesser beers. Not many stouts get this rating; when one does, you probably shouldn't bother even trying it.
